Helping Dogs Feel Calm and Confident

Many dogs get nervous or overstimulated when they see other dogs or unfamiliar people. At Animal Welfare League NSW, our animal attendants use simple, positive techniques to help dogs feel safe and supported in new situations. One of these is the “Look at That!” game — a fun way to teach dogs that seeing something uncertain can lead to something great, like a tasty treat!

What’s the Goal?

To change how a dog feels when they see something that makes them nervous, by turning it into a positive experience.

How It Works

Start at a distance where the dog can see the other dog but isn’t stressed.

When the dog glances at the other dog, immediately say “Yes!” and give a treat.

Repeat this each time they look — glance, “Yes!”, treat.

Soon, the dog begins to associate seeing another dog with something positive, rather than feeling anxious.

Why It Works

This technique, called counter-conditioning, helps dogs replace fear or stress with confidence and calmness. With consistency, dogs learn to look at their handler instead of reacting — a big win for both dog and owner.
